  30.      Last night, I went out and bought a selection of Chick religious tracts.
  31. This was my first-ever visit to a Christian bookstore, and I can safely say
  32. that they are not good places to meet women.  I bought several Chick tracts for
  33. 12 cents each.
  34.  
  35.      If you've never seen or heard of a "Chick Comic," then I should explain
  36. what they are exactly.  They are little booklets, about 2.5 by 5 inches, with a
  37. cartoon drawing and title on the cover.  They're either handed out on the
  38. street, or left in likely places for people to find.  My initial acquaintance
  39. came from finding one in a phone booth at a ball game.  Opening one up and
  40. looking inside exposes one to a whole new vista of weirdness.  Most people seem
  41. to remember the first time they read a Chick comic.
  42.  
  43.      My friend Doug walked into my office today, picked one up and started
  44. reading.  "There's something about these things..." he said, 15 minutes later.
  45. "They're sick, but fascinating."  If you've ever read one, I'm sure you'll
  46. agree.  He went on to opine that they're sort of like an automobile accident:
  47. you know you'll be shocked or disgusted, but you look anyway.
  48.  
  49.      These things appear to be the handiwork of one Jack T. Chick, about which
  50. not much seems to be generally known.  But, if Mr. Chick were to appear nude as
  51. a Playboy centerfold (a concept which he and I would both find appalling,
  52. though for different reasons), it's likely that the personality section would
  53. include something like this:
  54.  
  55. Turn-ons: Jesus Christ, the Bible, the Rapture, and Armageddon.
  56.  
  57. Turn-offs: Catholicism, the Pope, the Vatican, New Age, teachers,
  58.   homosexuals, child psychologists, rock music, disobedient children,
  59.   Mary Magdalene, drugs, Masons, evolution, witches, cults, animal and
  60.   human sacrifice, sin, Satan, and those who mock born-again Christians.

  62.      The tragic thing is that Mr. Chick is actually quite a good artist when he
  63. wants to be, rivaling Richard Corben (of _Den_ fame) at his best.

  65.      At 12 cents each, I bought a bunch of them.  Here are writeups on some of
  66. the "better" of them:

  70. _Doom Town_ - 1991.  Summary: A Christian cameraman tapes a gay rights rally,
  71. then tells one of the protesters the story of the destruction of Sodom.  Gay
  72. protester converts, is saved.  Artwork: high-quality.

  74. Highlights:
  75.  
  76.   - Rally speaker says, "If research money for AIDS is not coming at a certain
  77.     level by a certain date, all gay males should give blood.  Whatever is
  78.     required to get national attention is valid.  If that includes *blood
  79.     terrorism*, so be it."
  80.   - Lot looks very much the upper-middle-class WASP.
  81.   - Full page depiction of fat, sweaty bald guy with beard kissing Rip Torn
  82.     lookalike with beard and bouffant hair while another fat bald guy chases
  83.     a little boy past a demonic-looking statue.
  84.   - Hairy, hulking guy tells quivering innocent child, "It's that time again!"
  85.     Bottom of panel says "God heard the cries of these tortured little ones
  86.     and took action," but it looks like the "tortured little ones" got nuked
  87.     along with the rest of Sodom.
  88.   - Includes the part where Lot offers his two virgin daughters to the crowd.
  89.   - Left out the part where Lot's wife turns into a pillar of salt.

  93. _The Last Generation_ - 1992.  Summary: In the near future, the World Court in
  94. Rome sentences believers in Jesus to committal to a mental camp for treatment,
  95. or execution.  Bobby, the young son of a Christian family, turns in his family
  96. for a reward; the grandfather is tortured and dies, his parents escape to a
  97. cabin in the woods, but are found later.  Rapture occurs just as the bad guys
  98. break in.  Artwork: high-quality.
  99.  
  100. Highlights:
  101.   - Grinning newscaster reminiscent of _Robocop_.
  102.   - Bobby's neo-Nazi uniform.
  103.   - Bobby complains, "The kids call me _slime_ because my @!!!**! parents are
  104.     _still_ married."  Bottom of panel says, "'Honour thy father and thy mother
  105.     that your days may be long upon the land.' Ex. 20:12 *(Bobby won't live
  106.     long.)*"
  107.   - Unique "peace sign on a stick" with serpent symbol.  Also, the "One World"
  108.     insignia.
  109.   - Crazed expression on Bobby's face when he holds up pictures of cute
  110.     kitten and puppy and says, "My teacher said these are _great_ for a 
  111.     Halloween sacrifice."
  112.   - Mom says, "Bobby!  Go to bed right now!"
  113.     Bobby replies, "Larry's mom said that to him, now she's in a
  114.     concentration camp for...CHILD ABUSE!  Wanna join her?"
  115.   - Interesting tract houses with lighted numbers of the roofs.
  116.   - Bobby's teacher says, "It's with great pleasure... I introduce a famous
  117.    _New Age Healer!"
  118.   - Bobby: "If I turn in a sicko, will I get a reward?"
  119.     "Yes!  A BIG reward!"
  120.   - Grandfather being tortured at "Mental Health" facility.  "How long before
  121.     he cracks?"
  122.     "Not long!  We inserted microchips to increase the pain."
  123.   - "@!!!**!  Take this heretic away.  Dispose of it, or use it for food."
  124.   - At end: "Little Bobby grew up and died in his sins, because he never
  125.     prayed a prayer like this:" etc.
  126.   - I can't help but think this would make a really good movie.

  130. _The Beast_ - 1988.  Summary: An account of the things that will happen at and
  131. shortly before the end of the world, with emphasis on how it won't be long now.

  136.   - Full page panel "Life as it is today" depicting fighting, killing, nudity,
  137.     cursing, gambling, drinking, smoking, divorce, adultery, homosexuality,
  138.     and women dancing on stage to wild music.
  139.   - "I have the power... Lucifer is lord!"
  140.     "Yes, and we are bringing peace with a one world government - a New Age."
  141.     [I bet the Chick people just went nuts over Bush's "New World Order"]
  142.   - "Satan raises up a leader that the world will love."
  143.     "This 'man of peace' stabilizes the world economy and pulls the religions
  144.     of the world together.  He is Satan's masterpiece and he rules from the
  145.     Vatican."
  146.   - "With the use of computers, the Beast will be able to control every
  147.     person on the globe."
  148.   - People with "666" tattooed on forehead.
  149.   - 3 wheeled Cushman-like police vehicle with hydraulic guillotine on the
  150.     back for fast public executions.
  151.   - Classic Chick depictions of souls rising from graves, flying through
  152.     clouds, being judged.  "Do their names appear in the Book of Life?"
  153.     "No, Lord, their names do not appear!"  Some are cast into the "lake of
  154.     fire", others rewarded.

  158. _The Death Cookie_ - 1988.  Summary: The Catholic church is a plot by Satan to
  159. corrupt the faithful.  But a few faithful find the real word of God and will be
  160. saved.  The "Death Cookie" of the title refers to the eucharist.  Artwork:
  161. classic Chick: very cartoonish, people all have big noses.

  163. Highlights:
  164.  
  165.   - Claim that ancient Egyptian sun god worshipers also had a "eucharist/
  166.     transubstantiation" myth.
  167.   - "The religious advisor added more Jesuses to "Mama Church" to confuse
  168.     the children.  And they had to bow down and worship each one listed
  169.     below as God:
  170.     * The baby Jesus at Christmas.
  171.     * The dead Jesus on a cross.
  172.     * The angry Jesus up in heaven that nobody can calm down except his
  173.       mother.  This Jesus was created to frighten everyone in Mama Church.
  174.     * Even Holy Papa became a type of Jesus.  [Picture of Pope w/ big nose]
  175.     * The Holy Helpers became other Jesuses.  [Picture of Monks w/ big noses]
  176.     * But the most dangerous Jesus was the one they stole from Egypt... the
  177.       "cookie god." [picture of eucharistic wafer]
  178.   - Letters IHS on eucharist "stand for Isis, Horus and Seb, the gods of
  179.     Egypt.
  180.   - "The cookie-god was actually called the Wafer God."
  181.   - "Is this Jesus Christ, His blood, body, and soul?"
  182.     "No, it's symbolic."
  183.     "Burn him!"
  184.   - "The Vatican is marked for judgment and destruction by the Lord for her
  185.     blasphemy."

  189. _The Deceived_ - 1990.  Summary: Two Arabs discover that their faith, Islam, is
  190. nothing but a plot by the Catholic church to control the Arab people.  They
  191. accept Jesus and are saved, but must spread the word so that other Arabs aren't
  192. taken in.  Artwork: exceptionally high-quality.

  194. Highlights:

  196.   - What with the Islamic prohibition on "graven images," how many Muslims
  197.     do they expect are gonna read a comic book?
  198.   - Semiramis, the queen of Babylon and "Queen of Heaven," is a real
  199.     knock-out.  "Satan would use her to destroy billions of souls."
  200.   - "Idols of the 'Queen of Heaven' were everywhere.  Behind each idol a
  201.     demon controlled all who bowed down to it."  Below is picture of people
  202.     kneeling and praying in front of a statue that, from the back, looks
  203.     suspiciously like the Virgin Mary and Child, complete with haloes.
  204.   - "To destroy true Christianity, Satan moved his murderous religion from
  205.     Babylon to Rome.  Roman idols were given Christian titles.  Venus was
  206.     called Mary... who became the 'Queen of Heaven.'  Roman Catholicism was
  207.     born and Satan ruled from the Vatican."
  208.   - "The evil popes wanted to rule from Jerusalem instead of Rome.  But they
  209.     needed an army to kill the Jews and destroy true Christianity."
  210.   - "For this dirty job, the Vatican used the children of Ishmael."  Picture
  211.     shows Pope and his men.  "The Bedoins refuse Catholicism.  Then we'll
  212.     unite them with a new religion, so we can control them."
  213.   - "Where did the name 'Allah' come from?  Abraham, Moses, and Jesus never
  214.     called God by that name.  One of the idols [in the Kaaba in Mecca]
  215.     belonged to Muhammad's Quraysh tribe. It was called 'Allah!'"
  216.   - The two Arabs are upset: "Islam is a FALSE HOPE!  That means one
  217.     billion of us are praying to the demon power behind that idol."

  221. _Angels_ - 1986.  Summary: A down-on-its-luck Christian rock band signs a
  222. contract with Lewis Siffer and becames part of his devious scheme to control
  223. billions of souls with music.  Three band members die or are otherwise lost,
  224. but a young Christian girl slips a Chick Publication into Tom's jacket and he
  225. finds Jesus and is saved.  Artwork: classic Chick.

  229.   - Lewis Siffer, get it?  [_Angelheart_ did this much better, IMHO]
  230.   - "My servants run this worldwide organization.  It's called 'Killer Rock.'"
  231.   - "Then I gave them Elvis and the Beatles, etc."
  232.   - "From the 70's on, I gave the world KISS, Black Sabbath, Motley Crue,
  233.     etc.  My music pushes murder, drugs, free sex, suicide, to destroy country,
  234.     home, and education..."
  235.   - "Who do you think started Christian Rock?  I did!"  [I won't argue with
  236.     that]
  237.   - "Everyone loves it because it all sounds the same."
  238.   - Band member dies on stage while band sings, "Embrace me, Love of Death"
  239.   - "My heavy metal has turned millions into rock-a-holics... they've become
  240.     zombies."
  241.   - Tom is depressed: "It's all over.  Everything's ashes.  Bobby died of AIDS,
  242.     and Jim OD'd.  And Don is into vampirism."
  243.   - I wonder if there's a Chick comic that deals with rap.

  247. _The Curse Of Baphomet_ - 1991.  Summary: Mr. and Mrs. Scott's son attempts
  248. suicide, and his prognosis is grim, until their friend Ed reveals the truth
  249. about Masonry.  The Scotts denounce Masonry and burn all of Mr. Scott's Shriner
  250. paraphernalia in the back yard while praying for forgiveness.  Upon returning
  251. to the house, the hospital calls to tell them that their son has regained
  252. consciousness and is going to be okay.  Artwork: classic Chick.

  256.   - Mr. Scott says "I'm a Shriner!
  257.     "Ed replies, "No!  I had no idea you were into witchcraft."
  258.   - "This 'Great Architect of the Universe' you pray to is NOT the God of
  259.     the Bible... it's really Baphomet!  And he's ugly, frightening, and 
  260.     completely satanic."

  263.   - "...the *MASONIC RELIGION* should be, by all of us initiates of the
